Everything You Need to Know About Cryolipolysis and CoolSculpting

Have you ever heard of cryolipolysis? What about fat freezing, or maybe CoolSculpting? Well, whatever you call it, they’re actually all the same thing! But what exactly is cryolipolysis, fat freezing, and CoolSculpting? It’s a cosmetic procedure that uses cold temperatures to break down fat cells in certain areas of the body and is particularly good for those who have stubborn fat deposits. It’s an incredibly popular procedure for fat loss and is FDA-approved and non-invasive.

Things You Need to Know about Cryolipolysis

Cryolipolysis is non-invasive, which means that you won’t have to go under the knife for the procedure to be performed. It can be performed either in a doctor’s clinic or an outpatient clinic, and you won’t have to be under anaesthesia. It is safe and effective, and the results are permanent.

CoolSculpting may be the name you associate most with fat freezing, and it is the household name in fat freezing treatments. CoolSculpting is actually the patented name of a fat freezing device. It aims to reduce localised fat deposits in stubborn areas that don’t respond to exercise or diets and is not intended for people who have obesity. The FDA has approved for CoolSculpting to be used on areas such as the chin, upper arms, thighs, abdomen, hip or flank, upper back, lower back, and underneath the buttocks. You can have more than one area treated, or treat an area more than once.

Other than CoolSculpting, there are also fat freezing treatments available in Malaysia, such as Zimmer Z-lipo Cryolipolysis from Germany and Clatuu Cryolipolysis from Korea.

1. What is the Difference between Clatuu Cryolipolysis and CoolSculpting?

Although both Clatuu and CoolSculpting are devices used in fat freezing treatments, there are some differences. CoolSculpting is an American brand and was first approved by the FDA to treat flanks in 2010. Then, it was approved to be used on the stomach in 2012, and in 2015 for the thighs. On the other hand, Clatuu is a newer form of fat freezing technology. It was first introduced in 2015 and has steadily been gaining traction as a fat freezing device ever since.

CoolSculpting only comes with a single applicator and a double applicator. Conversely, what differentiates Clatuu is that it makes use of two applicators that come in various sizes and shapes. This means that Clatuu is able to treat more kinds of body shapes, as no two bodies are the same. It also means that the doctor is able to give a more personalised treatment with Clatuu, as they can use an applicator that fits your body the best rather than using a standard-sized applicator.

In addition to that, Clatuu, being more high-tech, uses the latest 360 dual cooling applicator technology. It freezes fat for up to 30% higher than other fat freezing devices on the market, including CoolSculpting. This means that the treatment can be done faster.

Furthermore,  a CoolSculpting session is typically more expensive than a Clatuu session. This is because Clatuu devices can be used in more than one area at a  time, whereas CoolSculpting devices cannot. Moreover, Clatuu devices themselves don’t require practitioners to obtain a licence or extra fees associated with the licence, thus reducing the price, unlike with CoolSculpting devices.

2. How Does Cryolipolysis Work?

Cryo means cold, lipo means fat, and lysis means destruction. As the name suggests, cryolipolysis, or fat freezing, destroys targeted fat deposits essentially by freezing them. The temperature of CoolSculpting targets the subcutaneous fat layer without damaging the surrounding skin. This can happen because the temperature is cold enough to freeze fat, but not cold enough to freeze tissue. When the fat is frozen, they crystallise, and then begins to thaw over the next day or two. The fat then liquefies, and your body begins to eliminate it through the lymphatic system, or in easier terms, you urinate it out. Once the fat cells are eliminated from the body, they cannot regrow.

3. How Long Will It Take to See Results?

For most patients, an average fat reduction of 15 to 28 percent will be seen at about 2 to 4 months after a CoolSculpting procedure. However, some patients report seeing results as soon as 3 weeks after the procedure

4. What Areas of the Body Are Suitable for Cryolipolysis?

The areas that are suitable for fat freezing are areas that have a stubborn fat deposit, such as the chin, upper arms, thighs, abdomen, hip or flank, upper back, lower back, and underneath the buttocks.

5. What is the Average Price of Cryolipolysis in Malaysia?

The average price for a CoolSculpting session in Malaysia will cost around RM 2,000 to RM3,000. However, most patients require more than one session to obtain optimum results.

On the other hand, the average price of a Clatuu session is about RM 1,800, Most patients also typically require about three sessions before seeing optimal results.

6. What are the Advantages & Disadvantages of Cryolipolysis?

Advantages:

  • Non-invasive, non-surgical
  • It is a low risk procedure with no chance of infection
  • It can be performed on an outpatient basis.
  • Patients do not need to be sedated or go under anesthesia
  • More than one area of the body may be treated in a single session
  • Patients can resume their normal daily activity immediately after the treatment
  • The damaged or destroyed fat cells are permanently removed from the body

Disadvantages:

  • The procedure is not recommended for people who have obesity.
  • The skin may be textured after the procedure
  • Patients may require more than one session
  • The next session can’t be performed until 6 to 8 weeks after the first session to ensure that the fat cells have been completely expelled after the first session.
  • It may take up to 6 months to see results
  • Fat may be deposited in other areas of the body
